Euregion Film Festival 2020

With its fifth-year anniversary, Euregion Film Festival 2020 has a motto for all new and professional filmmakers - Dare & Endure! At this all-out 5-day festival with a Pitch Forum, ScriptLab, ShortsLab, Short Film Competition, special screenings, networking drinks, you can submerge yourself into an intensive talent-development atmosphere to dare creating new projects and endure the ups & downs of the filmmaking process!

This is the moment to bring your skills to the next level. Dare to participate and meet like-minded creators like yourself who are on a similar path to making their dream come true or get inspired by other filmmakers that already finalized their projects.

Together with Jolein Laarman the participants are going to learn about story ideas, story elements, synopsis and treatment development, while reading case studies of synopses of the participants of the ScriptLab 2020.

The festival will be opened by Bas Devos' Ghost Tropic and the pre-film Zo Gezegd by Mark Stevens who will be present for a CineTalk.

Wim had a lovely date with the beautiful Manuela. He brags about the date to his friends, but it turns out that this is a fantasy and he is bragging against the police. They confront him with a burning question: what really happened that night? What is Wim going to tell them?

Ghost Tropic (Bas Devos, 2019, Belgium, 85 min)

A cleaning lady from Brussels (Khadija) falls asleep on the last subway after working late. On her nocturnal journey she finds herself compelled to ask for and give help to the other inhabitants of the night.

During the Writers Room group session, together with mentor Moniek Kramer the participants of the ScriptLab 2019 will discuss the third draft of their scripts that they have been working in February-March 2020.

Get ready for the intensive work with your story! From this session onwards all the writers will immerse into the groundwork of making their stories stronger together with their coach Jolein Laarman and get ready for the next rewriting session in the evening.

20 maart 10:00 Producers Lab Workshop | Post-Production (ENG)

The guest coaches Neeltje van der Heijden and Niko Remus will talk about the most important aspects of post-production and will give examples from their own work. How do you structure and plan your post-production? How do you treat the post-production process in each phase of a production?

Niko Remus has a background in film editing and works as a freelance post-production supervisor and a workflow consultant. With his base in Germany, he works mostly on international projects – fiction and documentary films for cinema release. Niko gives lectures at various film schools and is a coach for the Torino Film Lab, the Rotterdam Lab and Berlinale Talents. In 2010 he was part of the very first APostLab (then EP2C) workshop and took on the role as Head of Studies for A Post Lab in 2017.

With a background in journalism, online media and photography, Neeltje van der Heijden landed in film post-production in 2006. After having built her knowledge at an image post facility for nine years, she became a freelance post production supervisor in 2015. She has worked mainly on international co-produced features projects like Heartbound by Janus Metz (documentary), Gold by Rogier Hesp and Je teraz Klamie by Pawel Borowski. Neeltje started teaching at APostLab in 2013 and became the workshop’s program manager in 2017.

Don’t miss the first part of the Official Competition where international and Euregional films will compete for the Best Film! All films are chosen based on the first part of this year’s motto and thus deal with DARING stories, encounters or characters.

The selected films:

1. Downward Facing Dogs (Karsten de Vreugd, 2019, the Netherlands, 11 min)

When Mara hastily enters her yoga class she desperately tries to find her zen, only to find out her zen is at the end of letting out all her frustrations first.

2. Weightlifter (Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk, 2018, Poland, Ukraine, 31 min)

At first sight, this is a story of a true price of a victory.

3. Something About Alex (Reinout Hellenthal, 2018, the Netherlands, 18 min)

A young teenager develops a close friendship with his older sister's boyfriend, and must confront the depth of his feelings when the couple announces that they will be moving away.

4. Dafa Metti/Difficult (Tal Amiran, 2019, United Kingdom, 15 min)

Under Paris' glittering Eiffel Tower, illegal Senegalese migrants sell miniature souvenirs of the monument, to support their families back home. Far from their loved ones and hounded by the police, each day is a struggle through darkness in the City of Lights.

20 maart 19:15 DMFFFiets Special Screening | …pour un maillot jaune, 14 & The Flying Scotsman (ENG)

The Dutch Mountain Film Festival organises a special screening evening DMFFFiets during Euregion Film Festival.

The evening will start with a French documentary ...Pour Un Maillot Jaune - a cinematic tribute – about the 1965 Tour de France, directed by Claude Lelouch. It will be followed by a Q&A with Ronald van der Kolk (action sports cameraman) and a short animation film 14 by Juliette Coutellier that has been selected to many festivals around the world among which are the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and International Short Film Festival Leuven.

The highlight of the program is a feature film The Flying Scotsman: a true story about the amateur cyclist Graeme Obree, who breaks the world one-hour distance record on a bike he made from old bits of washing machines.

The program is in Dutch. The Flying Scotsman is screened in English with Dutch subtitles.

During this group workshop the ScriptLab participants together with Jolein Laarman will have a table read of each script (max. one hour per project) with actors and get feedback on their scripts.

21 maart 10:00 ScriptLab 2020 Writers Room | Synopsis (ENG)

The second Writers Room will be devoted to the synopsis again, however, with a different coach - Marietta von Hausswolff. Together with her, the participants will read the new version of the synopses and proceed with the in-depth work while preparing for the next stage - the treatment.

During the workshop, the guest coach Harro van Staverden will talk about production company development: how to make a business plan and strategy, what are the startup and ongoing costs, who is your target market, how long will it take you to break even? Those and many more questions will be addressed during this session.

21 maart 10:00 Writers Room - Fiction (NL)

Every year CineSud organizes the Writers Room - Fiction. Up to six participants are given the opportunity to bring their script and project plan to a higher level in intensive group coachings led by an industry professional. Together, difficulties and challenges are discussed and solutions are sought. By doing this in groups, the participants learn from each other and each others’ challenges and they also learn to work analytically and purposefully.

In this last session, together with coach Ibo Karatay, the participants discuss the progress of their work and add the last finishing touches to their developed film ideas.

For Writers Room Fiction participants only.

Every year CineSud organizes the Writers Room - Documentary. Up to six participants are given the opportunity to bring their script and project plan to a higher level in intensive group coachings led by an industry professional. 21 maart 14:00 Pitch Training (ENG)

Participants of the Producers Lab and of the Pitching Forum will follow an extra Pitch Training by the producer Reinier Selen in which they will learn how to pitch a project on stage of the Royal Theater, what to pay special attention to, as well as discuss possible mistakes and respective solutions to make the pitch even better.

For Producers Lab & Pitching Forum participants only (obligatory).

Four selected pitch participants will dare to tell the world about their film idea and compete for the main price of €2.000.

During the Pitching Forum ScriptLab and Producers Lab participants will pitch their projects or their companies and the winner will go to Cannes 2020 as a part of Talents to Cannes program.

21 maart 18:00 Film | Short Film Competition 2 (ENG)

The second block of the Official Competition films is in no way inferior to the first one. Take a seat and enjoy a wide range of different short films that all deal with stories in which situations or challenges have to be ENDURED.

The selected films:

1. Waiting Room (Laura Huygen, 2019, the Netherlands, 11 min)

With limited access to a job or entertainment, how would you spend your time? This film is a portrait of eight people who await their asylum procedure, showing what they do during the day and what all that waiting does to them.

2. Unlike Today (Astrid Menzel, 2018, Germany, 20 min)

An elderly couple fights for dignity as they balance on the edge of their earlier lives. Both resist accepting their new life, now dominated by illness and nursing. A visit from their daughter could be the turning point.

3. Zwart (Tommie Geraedts, 2019, the Netherlands, 7 min)

When the slightly naïve Ronnie gives up a tad too much personal information during verification questions on his computer, he receives a fully customised invitation from his OS in return. After accepting the offer his OS takes over his computer, forcing Ronnie to do everything in his power to keep his dark desires a secret for his approaching girlfriend.

4. By the River (Dan Braga Ulvestad, 2019, Australia, 25 min)

Stretching along the river Ganges rests Varanasi, the holiest of India’s seven sacred cities, and a place where devout Hindus go to die in hopes of achieving moksha - becoming liberated from the cycle of rebirth. Hindu scriptures say that a soul has to undergo 8.4 million rebirths before reaching the human form, the only form one can attain moksha, and dying in Varanasi and being cremated along the banks of the river is believed to be the ideal way of achieving this. Several so-called ‘death hotels’ exist to accommodate believers who abandon their lives and come here in wait for death - some for as long as 40 years.

5. Fifteen-Two (John Summerson, 2019, United Kingdom, 5 min)

A mother recalls her parents' uniquely long relationship — one made strong, in part, by their daily habit of making time to play Cribbage together.

Limburg has so much to offer. In this special, non-competitive screening, films made in Limburg or by Limburgian filmmakers are given a platform before the highlight of the evening: the Award Show!

1. Asnacht (Jeroen Mourmans, 2020, the Netherlands/Limburg, 19 min)

When Marcel finds himself in a state of loneliness and melancholy right after the three-day festivities of Carnival in Maastricht have ended, he decides to get on a random bus that’s completely packed with partygoers to procrastinate the return to his empty everyday existence.

2. Wine (Anna Demianenko, 2020, the Netherlands/Limburg, 26 min)

After 10 years of not seeing her family, Sanne is forced to spend a night at their hostile house, while waiting for her father to wake up after a risky surgery. Having no desire for reconciliation, Sanne fears her thoughts that with the death of her father, she can never be a part of this family again.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a special cast and crew screening.

3. Convoi Exceptionnel (Genio de Groot, 2019, the Netherlands/Limburg, 15 min)

A tragicomic and sometimes absurdist portrait of Ronnie in his 40s who still lives with his mother. By profession he is a transport assistant for convoi exceptionnel. As a hobby, Ronnie takes pictures of exceptional transport and collects miniatures of extraordinary trucks. A long-cherished dream of his mother is to become a grandmother. Now that she is dying, the son will have to look for a wife. But how will he actually find one?

Selection proces

The pre-selection for the Official Competition has been done by Alexander Gusev (EFF festival programmer). Günter H. Jekubzik (German film critic), Kato De Boeck (Belgian scriptwriter and director) and Pascal Essers (projection coordinator, Filmhuis de Spiegel) have been decision makers on selecting the final program.

Euregion Film Festival 2019

Euregion Film Festival 2019 took place March 21-25 in Schunck in Heerlen. More than 20 films were shown, including 5 world premieres. Special guests were – amongst others – Moniek Kramer, Marietta von Hauswolff, Bart van Langendonck, Denis Vaslin, Hans de Wolf, Genaro Rosato and Janet van den Brand. Best Film was given to Pistol, Special Jury Prize to Patision Avenue and the Youth Jury chose as well Pistol as Best Film. The festival attracted 1000 visitors.

Euregion Film Festival 2018 took place March 22-25 in Schunck in Heerlen. More than 40 films were shown, including 5 world premieres. Special guests were – amongst others – Johan Leysen, Kristof Hoornaert, Germen Boelens, Joost Rekveld, Joost Seelen, Peter Bouckaert and Remy van Heugten. Best Film was given to Wild Beast, Best Euregional Film to Stille Storm. The festival attracted 1020 visitors.

Euregion Film Festival 2017

Euregion Film Festival 2017 took place March 16-19 in Schunck in Heerlen. More than 35 films were shown, including 8 world premieres. Special guests were – amongst others – Martin Koolhoven, Robert-Jan Westdijk and Kaweh Modiri. The 2017 edition of Euregion Film Festival hosted the first edition of DocCampus and FilmCampus. Best Film winner was Allegory of the Jam Jar, Best Euregional Film Tien by Nathalie Crum. The festival attracted 750 visitors.

Euregion Film Festival 2016

Euregion Film Festival 2016 took place January 22-24 in Schunck in Heerlen. More than 30 films were shown, including 6 world premieres. Special guests were – amongst others – Pieter Kuijpers, Anne Gehring, Vera Ketelaars, Max Porcelijn, Pedro van Eecken en Harro van Staverden. The 2016 edition of Euregion Film Festival hosted the first edition of the Crossborder Film Conference. Best Film winner was Mediation, Best Euregional Film Home Suite Home by Jeroen Houben. The Special Jury Prize went to The Blue & The Beyond by Youri Dekker. The festival attracted 700 visitors.

Alexander Gusev is not only a festival programmer and often asked jury member for film festivals, but also a true film lover. For CineSud he was already involved as the festival programmer for SHIFT Film Festival 2018 and 2019 as well as for the Euregion Film Festival 2019 and its new edition in 2020.

Günter H. Jekubzik is an independent international film journalist from Germany. He has been part of many international film festivals before, such as 13th Palm Springs International Film Festival (2002) and 63rd Venice International Film Festival (2006).

Günter is one of the decision makers who selected the final program for the Official Competition.

Harro van Staverden started his career as a producer in 1995 with a strong focus on youth and family content. By now he is known for, among other things, the television series Circus Noël and Tien Torens Diep as well as the feature films Secrets of War, Cool Kids Don't Cry and Code M.

Hein van Joolen is the co-founder of the film distribution company Gusto Entertainment. With the start of his own company, he clearly set himself one goal: getting more people to watch (Dutch) films in the cinema.

Ibo Karatay is a member of Rinkel Film since 2015 where he works as a development executive and producer. He is also the co-owner of Alchemic Film. The company develops and produces short as well as feature films.

Jolein Laarman worked as a production designer on a variety of different feature films and television productions before she realised that writing is her real passion. Since then she has written many different television films, series, shorts and feature films such as the feature films Broos, Tussenstand, Het Zusje van Katia, Among Us, Little Bird, Disappearance, which won many national as well as international prizes.

Over de gastspreker: Kato de Boeck | Decision Maker

Kato de Boeck is a Belgian scriptwriter and director who graduated in 2018 at the Royal Institute for Theatre, Cinema and Sound. Born in 1994, she grew up in a small town near Brussels, where she found her passion during drama classes: storytelling. Fascinated by human relations and cinéma-vérité, she finished her master program in film directing with her award-winning graduation film Provence. In 2019 she co-directed and wrote the Chinese short film Gai Dan Chai as part of a directors exchange program in Hong Kong and she is currently working on a new short film and web series.


Kato is one of the decision makers who selected the final program for the Official Competition.

Marietta von Hausswolff is a Swedish screenwriter for TV and film, and an international script consultant whose work over the last 11 years includes, among others, Sundance Labs, TorinoFilmLab, Binger Amsterdam, Biennale College Venice, Tiff Studio Toronto FF and Talent Campus Berlinale.

Nathalie Crum attended the Dutch Film Academy of Amsterdam where she graduated in the department of Directing Documentary in 2014. Her third-year film De Goede Vrede was screened at DOK.fest 2014 in München and was nominated for the Megaherz Filmschool Award. In the last years documentaries such as Ten and De Belofte van Slek followed.

Neeltje van der Heijden started working in film post-production in 2006. She became a freelance post production supervisor in 2015. She has worked mainly on international co-produced features projects like: Heartbound by Janus Metz (documentary), Gold by Rogier Hesp and Je teraz Klamie by Pawel Borowski. She is currently working on the Norwegian/Czech/Dutch feature Dragon Girl.

Nico Remus works as a freelance post-production supervisor and a workflow consultant. He mostly works on international projects – fiction and documentary films for cinema release. His projects in the recent years include: Bal – Honey by Semih Kaplanoglu, Hannah Arendt by Margarethe von Trotta, Only Lovers Left Alive by Jim Jarmusch, A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence by Roy Andersson and 55 Steps by Bille August.

Over de gastspreker: Roland van der Kolk | Coach Camerawork for Active Sports Workshop

Roland van der Kolk started working as a freelance cameraman at DutchView in 2006. In 2008 Ronald was asked to join Team Facilities, which in 2011 continued as DutchView and in 2016 as NEP. After 10 years of working, he started his freelance career under the name Ronald VAN DER KOLK IMAGES. Over the years he has done many productions in sports, shows, concerts and news programs, for example The Voice of Holland, Jinek, Champions League etc.
