Join an intense short film script development program!

Would you like to work thoroughly on your short film script, develop a film plan, both artistically and professionally? Submit your project and become a part of a first international Writers Room! Eight filmmakers from different countries will be selected to develop their films in group sessions with the coaches. Don't hesitate and submit to be one of them!

Writers Room & Bootcamp Shorts Lab 2021 is organised by CineSud together with Screen Talent Europe.

Writers Room 

During the Writers Room you will be working on your short film in a group session with coaches Mikael Bundsen or Alexe Landgren (eight filmmakers will be selected, each coach will work with four participants). To apply you already need to have a first draft of a script in English. The sessions will be held in English.

  • Writers Room Session 1: September 19 - 13:45-17:45
  • Writers Room Session 2: October 23 - 10:30-15:30
  • Writers Room Session 3: November 27 - 10:30-15:30

Would you like your project to be selected to the Writers Room? Participation in these Writers Room is limited to eight talents of Screen Talent Europe partners. Your application will be assessed by the partner from your region/country. Please fill in the application form below. We will preselect the scripts and inform chosen projects at latest September 1. If your project is selected, you will as well get free access to all Bootcamp Shorts Lab masterclasses.

Please note that you need to upload your documents in one file (PDF (max. 5mb)) with the title [name_project title]. Please include in your document:

  • Tagline, logline, synopsis, genre, format (tv, web, etc.), duration of the project (max. 1 page);
  • Motivation (max. 1 page);
  • Script (max. 20 pages);
  • (Short) biography & filmography (max. 1 page).

Bootcamp Shorts Lab

If your project is selected, you can join all the masterclasses of Bootcamp Shorts Lab for free! Bootcamp Shorts Lab is a 3-day online training program where you can develop your skills, work on your next (short film) project and earn everything from script development to the creative aspects of editing, sound and film distribution.

Check the complete program below. All the masterclasses will take place online via Zoom and will be held in English. Coaches will be - amongst others - Manuel Alberto Claro (director of photography Nymphomaniac, The House that Jack Built), producer Eliza Jones (whose short films were in competition at Festival de Cannes, Tribeca, TIFF, etc.), director Birgitte Stærmose (Crystal Bear winner Berlinale) and sound designer/-mixer Peter Albrechtsen (Dunkirk, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo).

17 september 10:00 Masterclass | Script Development: Shape up Your Idea Into a Killer Script (ENG)

You have an idea for what could make a nice short film but don’t know how to get started? Together with the coaches Guro Ekornholmen & Anniken Fjesme you will start the Bootcamp Shorts Lab by learning the basics of script development. How to refine the idea, how to write a convincing synopsis, structure your script and how to go further from there.

Timeslot: 10:00-12:45

17 september 13:15 Script: Get-together Working Sessions

Would you like to meet fellow filmmakers and talk about your script with them? During the Get-together Working Session you will be discussing and giving your feedback/recommendation and inspirations on the projects of your fellow filmmakers who have as well joined the Masterclass Script Development: Shape up Your Idea Into a Killer Script.

During the session the participants of the masterclass will be divided into Breakout Room and will have 20 minutes per project for discussion.

Please send your script to [email protected] We will pair filmmakers a week before the Bootcamp Shorts Lab and we will send you the scripts of your group members (2-3) in advance for preparation.

17 september 15:30 Masterclass | Producing: Find Ways to Finance Your Film (ENG)

After a refreshing homemade snack and a good conversation that lifted up the spirits even more, join the next masterclass that will deal with the production phase of a short film. Where to search for funding, how to finance your short film, how to make a budget, find the crew and start the production? The coach Eliza Jones will help find answers to these questions.

18 september 10:00 Masterclass | Directing: Bring Your Vision to the Screen (ENG)

The script is finished, the budget is more or less gathered, you are ready to make a film. But what makes each film special? The director's vision. In this masterclass the coach Birgitte Stærmose will teach you how to search for your director's vision, how to work with actors & crew and how to bring your story to life!

18 september 14:30 Masterclass | Camera & Composition: Make Your Story Visual (ENG)

In this masterclass the participants will learn from coach Manuel Claro how different camera angles and movements can render the meaning of a scene in unexpected ways and create a visual work of art that is even more artistically elaborated. The masterclass can be interesting both for directors, writers, producers and camera(wo)men.

18 september 16:15 Bootcamp Shorts Lab | Directing: Get-together Working Sessions

It is very often that we talk about scripts with the coaches and fellow filmmakers, but how about the director's vision? If you ask any director, the director's vision is the hardest document to write. Would you like to meet fellow filmmakers and talk about your director's vision with them? During the Get-together Working Session you will be discussing and giving your feedback/recommendation and inspirations on the projects of your fellow filmmakers who have as well joined the Masterclass Directing: Bring Your Vision to the Screen.

During the session the participants of the masterclass will be divided into Breakout Room and will have 20 minutes per project for discussion.

19 september 09:00 Masterclass | Editing & Sound: Enhance your Story in the Post (ENG)

It's a wrap! Finally, the production is done and you are ready to finish your film during the editing process. Together with the coach you set off into the journey of finding the best shots or creating the best sound atmosphere or even 'saving' the film. We all know about basic editing rules, but how can we, using and breaking the rules, make your story even better? This masterclass will reveal the secrets of finding the best editing solutions.

19 september 10:30 Masterclass: Sound Design: Refine Your Story With Sound (ENG)

Does sound matter for the film editing? Can it influence your story, can it damage your ideas or refine your storyline? How to search for the Sound vision? Together with the coach Peter Albrechtsen you will be creating a completely new sound universe on the editing table!

19 september 12:15 Panel | Distribution: Submit to be Selected (ENG)

The film is done, you are satisfied with it and now it needs to be shown to the world! But which festivals offer the perfect platform for your piece of work and how do you get accepted into the festival selections after all? The panelists will discuss distribution strategies, dos and don’ts.

19 september 13:45 Writers Room #1

The Bootcamp Shorts Lab has finished! You are ready to start working on your project! Eight selected filmmakers will work on their scripts together with the coach during three group sessions.

  • Eight selected participants will be divided into two groups of four;
  • During the session the coach will give feedback/insight on each script (50 min per project), each participant will join the discussion to discuss the project of fellow writers;
  • It is a group session, you need to read and prepare all the projects from the participants of your group;
  • The scripts of your fellow writers will be sent to you a week in advance for the preparation;
  • You will get homework after the session to make changes in your script and you will need to send you updated script to [email protected] on October 15.

The second group session of the Writers Room when eight selected filmmakers will work on their scripts together with the coach during three group sessions.

  • Eight selected participants will be divided into two groups of four;
  • During the session the coach will give feedback/insight on each script, each participant will join the discussion to discuss the project of fellow writers;
  • It is a group session, you need to read and prepare all the projects from the participants of your group;
  • The scripts of your fellow writers will be sent to you a week in advance for the preparation;
  • You will get homework after the session to make changes in your script and you will need to send you updated script to [email protected] on November 19.

Meet this year's Writers Room Coaches!

Alexe Landgren

Alexe Landgren (Sweden) is a scriptwriter/director, educated at IHTV and Alma Manusutbildning. In 2017 she won Pixel Talent Award, one of the biggest short film prizes in Sweden, and Lust, the short made with the prize money, premiered at Palm Springs ShortFest 2019. She’s currently in pre-production with her feature debut, Lykke Post Partum, and also co-writing two other features. Alexe tends to work with drama, subtle humor and female perspectives.

Mikael Bundsen

Mikael Bundsen (Sweden) is a screenwriter and director whose short Mother Knows Best premiered at the Berlinale in 2016 and went on to screen at 40 festivals worldwide, winning a number of awards. His latest short Involuntary Activist premiered in 2019 and went on to screen at festivals worldwide and air on BBC and Swedish Public Television. It was nominated for a BAFTA Cymru Award for Best short. Apart from writing screenplays for film and TV and directing shorts, Bundsen works as a script consultant and a screenwriting teacher.


Organisation

Bootcamp Shorts Lab 2021 is a unique online training program organised by CineSud together with our dear partners of Screen Talent Europe: VGR Filmcloud, FILMVÆRKSTEDET/KØBENHAVN, Odense Filmværksted, Film i Skåne, Galway Film Centre, New Noardic Wave, Film Stockholm, Filmwerkstatt Kiel and Mediefabrikken.

Screen Talent Europe is a network of film workshops and media centers in Europe. The purpose of the network is to promote and foster co-operation between partners, help filmmakers exchange knowledge, experiences and methods through talent camps, network meetings and co-productions. The network collaborates to produce international talent development projects such as pitching forums, film production camps, networking and social events. Furthermore, Screen Talent Europe works to strengthen the workshop model for support-based talent development and also assists countries in Europe currently without film workshops in developing similar resources and models.
