Theatre Balcony

Limburg (NL), Public buildings, Interior

Was it from this location that the bored upper-classes watched a theatre performance, or was it here that the flighty Mozart (Amadeus, 1984) shrieked with laughter while getting drunk? Whichever it is, the Bonbonnière (‘Chocolate Box’) is an atmospheric theatre and entertainment complex that served as a Jesuit church for centuries (since 1614). In 1789 this ‘theatre of the Lord’ was reconstructed to become a theatre for the people. After many renovations and improvements it is now a trendy location for parties, conferences, dinners and performances. La Bonbonnière has four halls, each with its own unique character. The Witte Zaal (White Hall: 22 metres long, 8 metres wide) is decorated with myriad mirrors and crystals, while in the cosy Theaterzaal (Theatre Hall: 14 metres long, 9 metres wide) the atmosphere is defined by the red plush furniture, gilded ornaments, a sky ceiling, balconies and theatre boxes.
