Finding your way

As a filmmaker, some things are very important: making films, obtaining funding and showing the film to the rest of the world out there! Around the globe there are so many great festivals and events that it is easy to lose track of what is happening. Among everything that is going on, it can be difficult to realistically assess which festival is the right one for your film.

Because of that CineSud Magazine started publishing monthly articles with the most interesting and promising international film festivals that you can submit to the following months. Next to that we give an overview of interesting funding options in the heart of the Netherlands, Belgium as well as Germany.

Film Festivals

Venice Film Festival

Submission deadline: July 1 (Critics' Week)
Festival dates: September 2 - September 12

The 77th Venice International Film Festival is organised by La Biennale di Venezia and directed by Alberto Barbera. It will take place at Venice Lido from 2 - 12 September 2020. The Festival is officially recognised by the FIAPF (International Federation of Film Producers Association). [Read more]

Cork Film Festival

Submission deadline: July 5 
Festival dates: November 5 - November 15

Cork International Film Festival is a local, national and international celebration of cinema, running annually in November each year in Cork. It is the largest film festival in Ireland and one of the Cork’s most significant and popular annual cultural events. [Read more]

Chicago International Film Festival

Submission deadline: July 6 
Festival dates: October 14 - October 25

The Chicago International Film Festival was started in 1964 by filmmaker and graphic artist Michael Kutza to provide an alternative to the commercial Hollywood movies that dominated the city’s theaters. At more than half of the screenings each year, filmgoers have the rare and exciting chance to meet directors, producers, writers and cast members who introduce their films and hold discussion sessions after the screenings. Seminci - Valladolid International Film Festival

Submission deadline: July 6
Festival dates: October 24 - October 31

The Valladolid International Film Festival is one of the oldest and most consolidated in the whole of Europe. It was born on 20 March 1956 as an additional feature of the Easter celebrations named the "Religious Film Week", according to an understanding of the seventh art as a vehicle for the transmission of Catholic moral values. DOK Leipzig

Submission deadline: July 7 
Festival dates: October 26 - November 1

DOK Leipzig is one of the world's leading festivals for documentary and animation films, unique in combining these two disciplines in its festival history of more than 60 years. Every year at the end of October, the festival attracts more than 47,000 viewers and presents more than 300 films from all over the globe. [Read more]

Busan International Film Festival

Submission deadline: July 31 
Festival dates: October 7 - October 16

Since its inception in 1996, Busan International Film Festival has grown fast to become the largest film festivity in Asia. The Festival has established its role as a strong supporter of the film industry through its various programs such as the Asian Film Market, Asian Project Market, Asian Cinema Fund and Asian Film Academy. Festival dates: October 22 - November 4

The Viennale is Austria’s most important international film event, as well as one of the oldest and best-known festivals in the German-speaking world. Every October, the Viennale takes place in beautiful cinemas in Vienna’s historic center, providing the festival with an international orientation and a distinctive urban flair. [Read more]

WFF - Warsaw Film Festival

Submission deadline: July 31
Festival dates: October 9 - October 18 

Established in 1985, in 2009 the Warsaw Film Festival joined the elite group of events recognized by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations as international film festivals - next to Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Locarno, San Sebastian, Karlovy Vary, Tokyo, Moscow, Mar del Plata, Montreal, Shanghai, Cairo, Goa, and Tallinn.
