Masterclass | The Auteur's Vision: Finding Your Voice & Building a Style

During this masterclass the participants will explore the concept of ‘voice’ in filmmaking by analysing other directors’ and writers’ work, discussing the importance of having a distinctive style, and learning tips and tricks for finding their own unique voice and building a consistent style.

Topics that are discussed during the masterclass are amongst others:

  • Analyzing Distinctive Voices – Study and break down the styles of renowned directors and writers to understand what makes their work unique.
  • Developing a Personal Filmmaking Style – Identify key elements that shape an individual creative voice and explore techniques to refine it.
  • Consistency in Storytelling and Aesthetics – Learn how to maintain a cohesive style across different projects while allowing for creative evolution.
  • Practical Tools for Self-Discovery – Experiment with exercises, feedback sessions, and creative prompts to uncover and strengthen personal storytelling perspectives.

Meet the Coach

Stijn Bouma (1991) is a Dutch filmmaker who studied at the University of Amsterdam and the Sarajevo Film Academy under Béla Tarr. His short film Lejla (2017) premiered at Cannes, and he later directed documentaries like Alleen tegen de Staat (2021) about the Dutch childcare benefits scandal. His latest feature, De Jacht op Meral Ö. (2024), continues exploring social injustices through cinema.
