In this edition of our monthly column we present some interesting festival- and funding options whose submission deadlines are all in January. Don't hesitate to check them out!

Finding your way

As a filmmaker, two things are very important: making films, obtaining funding and showing the film to the rest of the world out there! Around the globe there are so many great festivals and events that it is easy to lose track of what is happening. Among everything that is going on, it can be difficult to realistically assess which festival is the right one for your film.

Because of that CineSud Magazine started publishing monthly articles with the most interesting and promising international film festivals that you can submit to the following months. Next to that we give an overview of interesting funding options in the heart of the Netherlands, Belgium as well as Germany.

Film Festivals

Visions du Réel

Submission deadline: January 3
Festival dates: April 24 - May 2

The main goal of the Visions du Réel Foundation is to organise an international film festival accessible to all and centered around the cinéma du réel, as well as to organise activities within the international market dedicated to professionals. [Read more]

Bruxelles Short Film Festival

Submission deadline: January 26
Festival dates: April 22 - May 2

Since 2018, the Brussels Short Film Festival is an Oscars® Qualifying Film Festival. The winners of the Great Prize of the International and the National Competitions will be eligible for consideration in the Animated Short Film/ Live Action Short Film category of the Academy Awards® without the standard theatrical run, provided the film otherwise complies with the Academy rules. [Read more]

Krakow Film Festival

Submission deadline: January 31
Festival dates: May 31 - June 7

Krakow Film Festival is one of the oldest events in the world dedicated to documentary, animated and short feature films. It core consists of four competitions of equal rank: documentary film competition, short film competition, national competition and music documentary film competition DocFilmMusic. [Read more]

Seattle International Film Festival

Submission deadline: January 31
Festival dates: May 14 - June 7

The 46th Seattle International Film Festival will be held May 14 - June 7, 2020, showcasing more than 400 films from more than 85 countries countries to 140,000+ attendees over 25 days. [Read more]

Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia

Submission deadline: January 31
Festival dates: June 3 - June 23

In 2018, Short Shorts Film Festival was celebrating its 20th anniversary, and Short Shorts Film Festival Asia was celebrating its 15th anniversary. The festival now receives approximately 10,000 film submissions from around the world. It is now an Academy Awards® accredited festival and one of the largest film festivals in Asia. [Read more]

Sydney Film Festival

Submission deadline: January 31
Festival dates: June 3 - June 14

The world’s best new films come to Sydney every June for 12 days and nights of inspiring and entertaining premieres, talks and parties. 12 films are selected for the Official Competition, which celebrates “courageous, audacious and cutting-edge” cinema with a $60,000 cash prize. Sydney Film Festival also presents seven other cash awards over the course of the festival. [Read more]
