Finding your way
As a filmmaker, two things are very important: making films, obtaining funding and showing the film to the rest of the world out there! Around the globe there are so many great festivals and events that it is easy to lose track of what is happening. Among everything that is going on, it can be difficult to realistically assess which festival is the right one for your film.
Because of that CineSud Magazine started publishing monthly articles with the most interesting and promising international film festivals that you can submit to the following months. Next to that we give an overview of interesting funding options in the heart of the Netherlands, Belgium as well as Germany.
Film Festivals
Molodist - Kyiv International Film Festival
Submission deadline: March 1
Festival dates: May 30 - June 7
The main objective of the festival is to promote young professional cinema. Competitive program represents movies of debutants and Ukrainian short movies. Main sections comprise student films, first short films (fiction, animation, documentary), first feature films, and national competition. Molodist is one of the greatest specialized cinema events in Eastern Europe according to the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF). [Read more]
Sheffield Doc/Fest
Submission deadline: March 2
Festival dates: June 4 - June 9
The film programme offers filmmakers a place for inspiration, debate, growth and challenge, being also a relevant international platform to launch films and art works. It brings to audience a multitude of forms, ideas, ways of doing and thinking, through World, International, European and UK premieres. The festival screens over 180+ films of all lengths – with the 2019 programme having encompassed works from 50+ countries around the world, 54% of which were co/directed by women. [Read more]

The next Festival de Cannes will take place from 12-23 May under the presidency of Spike Lee and his Jury. In 2019, a record year, nearly 40,000 people joined the festival. Once again this year, the festival is welcoming guests from all four corners of the globe in this celebration of world cinema. [Read more]
Melbourne International Film Festival
Submission deadline: March 31
Festival dates: August 1 - August 18
MIFF is a not-for-profit organisation that has been continuously running since 1952, making it the leading film festival in Australia and one of the world’s oldest film festivals, alongside Cannes and Berlin. Presenting a curated global program of innovative screen experiences and the world’s largest showcase of exceptional Australian filmmaking, MIFF is an accessible, iconic cultural event that provides transformative experiences for audiences and filmmakers alike. Shanghai International Film Festival
Submission deadline: March 31
Festival dates: June 13 - June 23
The century-old film culture and film industry has wrought a rich film and cultural foundation for the city of Shanghai. In 1993, the Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) was born in the tide of reform and opening up. In 1994, it was recognized by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations as the first and only international non-specialized competitive film festival in China. [Read more]
