Brigit Hillenius is originally schooled as a Director of Photography. In the course of her career as a Director of Photography, in which she shot several feature films and documentaires, she also wrote and directed four documentaries. On September 12 Brigit is the coach for the Bootcamp Shorts Lab Masterclass Camera & Composition: Make Your Story Visual. We asked her three short questions to introduce herself and the topics of the masterclass.

"Setting out to develop your idea is the start of a long journey, so be sure you truly love your idea and are convinced it is good enough to share with others."

How do you cooperate with a director to define the style of a film?

The story and its characters (in fiction as as wel as in documentaries) is leading. What needs the story to be told in vision & sound as convincing and compelling as possible. This is closely linked to our own preferences, as to which style and composition we both like."

Which elements do you discuss before shooting?

"First camera style and lightning, how to create a certain atmosphere, a certain view. According to these elements we discuss the sort of equipment."

From the point of view of a camera(wo)man: what is lacking in the development of an artistic style/tone of a film in the development process?

"It depends on the collaboration between the director and me, and the film. Sometimes I think that a director is too cautious and that this particular film needs some more bravery. Sometimes it's the funding that is too little, but then we have to find ways to get what we want."
