Review | The Red Ball

In this year's edition of the SHIFT Film Festival, the Youth Jury got the opportunity to receive a free-of-charge coaching by the film critic Bjorn Gabriels who taught the basics of film analysis and how to write a good film review. Jussi Rautaniemi's film The Red Ball was one of the 12 films which has officially been selected to the festival's Short Film Competition. After having attended the workshops, Youth Jury member Damiën Joosten reviews the film.

The Red Ball is a short film about a boy that doesn't understand the world and time he is living in, as it is about to end. This dystopian film beautifully portraits what could happen if it is getting too hot on our planet and how humanity doesn't stand a chance.

On the technical side, this film is beautifully shot and the effects are great. You would definitely believe it. Story-wise, the different elements, such as the father, the boat and the rockets at the end might confuse the viewer a bit. However, the director was on the good track in creating a beautiful piece about a dystopian future!
