Finding your way
As a filmmaker, two things are very important: making films, obtaining funding and showing the film to the rest of the world! Around the globe there are so many great festivals and events that it is easy to lose track of what is happening. It can be difficult to realistically assess which festival is the right one for your film.
That's why CineSud Magazine started publishing monthly articles with the most interesting and promising international film festivals that you can submit to the following months. Next to that, we give an overview of interesting funding options in the heart of the Netherlands, Belgium as well as Germany.
Film Festivals
Aspen Shortsfest
Submission deadline: October 5 (regular)
Festival dates: April 5 - April 10
Aspen Shortsfest is an Oscar®-qualifying film festival recognized as one of the premier short film festivals in North America. Each April enthusiastic audiences, filmmakers and special guests from around the globe gather to participate in public screenings, panels, workshops, and other festivities that spotlight the art and craft of short moviemaking. Following in the tradition of Oscar® success, in 2020, Shortsfest’s Daughter by Daria Kashcheeva, and Sister by Siqi Song were both nominated for Best Animated Short Film. Additionally, Brotherhood by Meryam Joobeur and Nefta Football Club by Yves Piat were nominated for Best Live Action Short Film.[Read more]
Santa Barbara International Film Festival
Submission deadline: October 8 (official)
Festival dates: March 2 - 12
In addition to showcasing a diverse spectrum of films, tributes and galas. SBIFF also offers seminars with industry professionals including Directors, Writers, Producers and Women in the Business Panels, as well as Q&A sessions with a diverse selection of filmmakers.
SBIFF has established itself as one of the premiere international film festivals and we look forward to building on that success in 2022 and creating opportunities for participants to network with some of the world's leading independent distributors and filmmakers. In addition to expanding our slate each year to highlight emerging genres, styles and regions, SBIFF is growing our free children's educational and community outreach programs which cumulatively serve over 18,000 students and families.[Read more]
Glasgow Short Film Festival
Submission deadline: October 5 (regular)
Festival dates: March 23 - 27
Glasgow Short Film Festival, the largest competitive short film festival in Scotland, champions new film talent by providing an annual showcase and meeting point for new and established Scottish and international filmmakers, industry delegates and the local audience.
GSFF’s core programme comprises international and Scottish competitions. New talent is supported through a programme of learning and networking events, including panel discussions, workshops and one-to-one sessions. GSFF curates unique special programmes on particular movements or filmmakers of international importance, and hosts parties and live performances throughout the festival week. [Read more]
Underwire Festival
Submission deadline: October 31 (regular)
Festival dates: March 4 - 13
Underwire is the UK's only film festival celebrating female filmmaking talent across the crafts.
Founded in 2010 with the aim to change the face of the industry from the inside out, the festival has awarded training and mentoring opportunities to a decade of filmmakers and has screened over 800 films. Underwire is now a BAFTA recognised film festival. [Read more]
