Finding your way
As a filmmaker, two things are very important: making films, obtaining funding and showing the film to the rest of the world! Around the globe there are so many great festivals and events that it is easy to lose track of what is happening. It can be difficult to realistically assess which festival is the right one for your film.
That's why CineSud Magazine started publishing monthly articles with the most interesting and promising international film festivals that you can submit to the following months. Next to that, we give an overview of interesting funding options in the heart of the Netherlands, Belgium as well as Germany.
Film Festivals
In The Palace Film Festival
Submission deadline: December 2 (regular deadline)
Festival dates: April 22-29, 2023
The festival aims to present and promote contemporary film art form from Bulgaria, Europe, and the rest of the world. IN THE PALACE is a is a Goya Awards qualifying festival, Student Academy Award® qualifying festival, and an Academy Award®/Oscar® qualifying festival for shorts in the categories of Best Animation, Best Fiction and Best National Film. The San Francisco International LGBTQ+ Film Festival
Submission deadline: December 4 (early deadline)
Festival dates: June 15-25, 2023
Founded in 1977, the San Francisco International LGBTQ+ Film Festival is the longest-running, largest, and most widely recognized queer film exhibition event in the world. As a community event with an annual attendance of more than 63,000 (89,000 virtual attendance in 2020), the Festival is the most prominent and well-attended LGBTQ+ arts program in the Bay Area. In 2021, Frameline's Festival was named by MovieMaker one of the 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World. [Read more]
The Santa Barbara International Film Festival
Submission deadline: December 16 (final deadline)
Festival dates: February 8 – February 18, 2023
Now in its 38th year, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts and educational organization with a mission to engage, enrich and inspire people through film. [Read more]
The Palm Springs International ShortFest
Submission deadline: December 31 (regular deadline)
Festival dates: June 20-26, 2023
The Palm Springs International ShortFest is one of the largest showcases of short-form cinema in North America. The seven-day competitive festival is Academy Award, BAFTA and Goya-qualifying, annually screening hundreds of shorts from approximately 60 countries. ShortFest accepts submissions up to 40 minutes in duration, in the form of both fiction and non-fiction shorts. Categories include Animation, Documentary, and Live-Action. [Read more]
