Finding your way

As a filmmaker, two things are very important: making films, obtaining funding and showing the film to the rest of the world! Around the globe there are so many great festivals and events that it is easy to lose track of what is happening. It can be difficult to realistically assess which festival is the right one for your film.

That's why CineSud Magazine started publishing monthly articles with the most interesting and promising international film festivals that you can submit to the following months. Next to that, we give an overview of interesting funding options in the heart of the Netherlands, Belgium as well as Germany.

Film Festivals

Sundance Film Festival

Submission deadline: September 2 (official deadline features)
Festival dates: January 19-29, 2023

The Sundance Film Festival brings together the most original storytellers and the most adventurous audiences for its annual program of dramatic, documentary, and short films; New Frontier films, performances, exhibitions, and virtual reality experiences; episodic storytelling; lively filmmaker conversations and panel discussions; and dynamic music events. Flickerfest International Short Film Festival 

Submission deadline: September 12 (regular deadline)
Festival dates: January 20-29, 2023

Celebrating its 32nd year in 2023, Flickerfest has grown to become Australia's leading competitive International Short Film Festival celebrating masterful, creative and impactful storytelling and the most original voices from filmmakers across the globe. Flickerfest will screen in January 2023 under the stars over 10 days in the peak of the Australian summer at the iconic Bondi Beach with select highlights of the festival touring to 50+ venues Australia wide. Vancouver International Women in Film Festival

Submission deadline: September 15 (late deadline)
Festival dates: March 8 – 12, 2023 

Now in its 18th year, the Vancouver International Women in Film Festival (VIWFF) showcases an impressive line-up of short and feature-length films (narrative, documentary, experimental and animation) by established and emerging women and gender diverse filmmakers from around the world. [Read more]

Tampere Film Festival

Submission deadline: September 30 (early deadline)
Festival dates: June 6 – 20, 2023

Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia is an Academy Awards® accredited festival where the winner of the Best Short awards in the Live-action Competition, Animation Competition well as the Non-Fiction Competition, will be eligible for nomination in the short film categories of the Academy Awards® the following year. The festival was founded in 1999 as The Short Shorts Film Festival (SSFF), and since 2004, SSFF acquired a program specialized in Asian short films and established Short Shorts Film Festival Asia with the support of the Governor of Tokyo. Now, the combination of the two festivals take place annually in Tokyo as Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia, one of the largest short film festivals in Asia. [Read more]
