Finding your way

As a filmmaker, two things are very important: making films, obtaining funding and showing the film to the rest of the world! Around the globe there are so many great festivals and events that it is easy to lose track of what is happening. It can be difficult to realistically assess which festival is the right one for your film.

That's why CineSud Magazine started publishing monthly articles with the most interesting and promising international film festivals that you can submit to the following months. Next to that, we give an overview of interesting funding options in the heart of the Netherlands, Belgium as well as Germany.

Film Festivals

VIENNA SHORTS

Submission deadline: January 5 (regular deadline)
Festival dates: June 1-6, 2023

The international short film festival VIENNA SHORTS in Vienna annually shows around 300 productions under 30 minutes. The competition is divided into four categories, for which films with a completion date of January 1, 2022 or later can be submitted. The other sections consist of portraits and thematically curated programs, among others. Submissions are also open for out-of-competition programs. [Read more]

Tribeca Festival

Submission deadline: January 11 (deadline shorts)
Festival dates: June 7-18, 2023

For more than two decades, Tribeca Festival has been a destination for new, groundbreaking storytelling from established and emerging artists. The 2023 Tribeca Festival will take place from June 7-18 in New York City. Next June, Tribeca will continue to explore creative innovation across film, TV, immersive, games, audio storytelling, talks, and more. [Read more]

Open City Documentary Festival

Submission deadline: January 13 (early deadline)
Festival dates: September 6 – 12, 2023

Open City Documentary Festival creates an open space in London to nurture and champion the art of non-fiction cinema. Based at the UCL Centre for Public Anthropology, we deliver training programs, an annual documentary festival, the bi-annual Non-Fiction journal and events throughout the year that aim to challenge and expand the idea of documentary in all its forms. Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia

Submission deadline: January 31 (final deadline)
Festival dates: June 6-20, 2023

Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia is an Academy Awards® accredited festival where the winner of the Best Short awards in the Live-action Competition, Animation Competition well as the Non-Fiction Competition, will be eligible for nomination in the short film categories of the Academy Awards® the following year. The festival was founded in 1999 as The Short Shorts Film Festival (SSFF), and since 2004, SSFF acquired a program specialized in Asian short films and established Short Shorts Film Festival Asia with the support of the Governor of Tokyo. Now, the combination of the two festivals take place annually in Tokyo as Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia, one of the largest short film festivals in Asia. [Read more]
